Laxa i Adaldal Lodge - Iceland
Laxa i Adaldal Lodge - Iceland

During the past quarter century we have come to recognize that, in the world of salmo salar, the Atlantic salmon, there are "grand" rivers, "dramatic" rivers, "spirited" rivers and "prolific" rivers. But notwithstanding all the possibilities inhabiting the thesaurus, there is only one Icelandic salmon river which could be characterized as "profound" -- northern Iceland's Laxa i Adaldal.

The Fishing Laxa boasts by far the largest salmon in Iceland, a country known more for its numbers than average size of its fish. Of no other river in Iceland can it be said that most weeks salmon of more than 20 pounds are landed, fish of 25-29 pounds are taken regularly, and each season salmon of more than 30 pounds are hooked or caught. Notwithstanding its mostly glassy surface, reminiscent of Idaho's Henry's Fork, large Laxa salmon are inclined to prefer small flies and are known for their long runs and spectacular jumps, making each fish landed an object of justifiable pride to the successful angler.

The Accommodations Our Laxa lodge is generally considered the best in the country, immaculately clean and comfortable in the Scandinavian tradation. There are six single rooms, two double rooms with lavatory, three complete bathrooms and a sauna. In addition, there are two double rooms with private bathrooms. A handsome dining room, recently renovated, and cozy living room with fireplace and bar complete the living quarters. A heated tackle room is conveniently located adjacent to the entrance to the lodge proper. The lodge employs a full-time chef from the extraordinary Pearl Restaurant in Reykjavik, and so what we once termed outstanding food, tastefully served can now be legitimately called world-class gourmet fare. Everyone is a member of the Johanna Steingrimsdottir family, including the chef and guides, and all exude a spirit of warm hospitality and family pride. Unlike other lodges on other Icelandic rivers, no services are subcontracted.
