| Himalayan Outback - Himalayas, India |
 |
The Himalayas are considered the true land of adventure; overwhelming landscape; spectacular views; rich in history, art, tradition; and generous in its innumerable possibilities for “the adventure of a lifetime”.
One of the prime attractions in the Indian Himalayas is a legendary game fish, primarily native to India, the mighty Mahseer which has been rated very high among as the most sporting fish in the world.
The Majestic Mahseer is to fishing what the tiger was to Big Game hunting - The Ultimate Trophy. Maharajas, Viceroys, and even the Prince of Wales have all tried their hands at the Mahseer of India, so why not you?
Himalayan Outback focuses on fishing the most productive beats of the rivers and the lakes in the Indian Himalayas where the odds of trophy game fish are consistently high and in getting our guests to the most virgin, off the beaten track, areas with the best guides.
The Rivers:
The Mahseer inhabits the torrential rivers and perennial rivulets of the sub mountainous terrain in the course of the Himalayas. It can be found up to and altitude of 2,500 ft above sea level. The rivers that are considered to be the strongholds of the Himalayan Mahseer include the Ganges and its tributaries, the Eastern and Western Ramganga, the Mahakali and its tributaries, the Kosi, the Beas and its tributaries, the Sutlej and its tributaries, the Bhramaputra and its tributaries, the Ravi and its tributaries, the Yammuna and its tributaries, and the Indus along with its tributaries. Due to the diversity of regions in which the Mahseer is found in, and the assortment of techniques it can be had on, fishing for the Mahseer makes a particularly interesting pursuit for the avid angler.
The Guides:
Misty Dhillon leads all the fishing trips; he has been guiding fishing and fly-fishing expeditions since 1998, focusing on the Mahseer and the Trout through rivers in the Indian Himalayas. Through his fishing career, Misty and his guests have had several Mahseer over twenty pounds in the Himalayan Rivers on spinning including his personal best fifty-five pound Mahseer. Fly-fishing from the Himalayan Mahseer is his specialization; he is responsible for the creation of some of the most effective flies and fly-fishing techniques for taking these fish. Misty has also written several articles on Mahseer fishing.
Our team of company and local Fishing Guides escort all trips and expeditions. All guides that we engage, for a particular expedition, are familiar with the respective areas and have detailed knowledge of the rivers or lakes where you will be fishing. All company Fishing Guides speak English though some of the local Fishing Guides may not be conversant in English.
The Camps:
All of our accommodation is in tents as these trips focus on getting you “away from it all”. We use high quality, all-season dome tents for our guests, as they are the best suited for this kind of an operation. For our trekking and white water rating expeditions, we outfit these tents with Thermarest inflatable mattresses and sleeping bags.
We outfit our large fishing dome tents with camp cots in addition to the mattresses and sleeping bags during our fishing expeditions.
As part of our “minimal impact policy” and in adherence to regulations of the state Forest Department, we provide hygienic “dry pit” toilets as this system is considered to be ideally suited for such an operation.
This toilet is located, away from the river, in a small makeshift tent (enclosure) with a deep hole in the ground and an English style toilet seat on top. The system is considered hygienic and environmentally friendly. At the end of the day the toilet tent is shifted to another location! A bathing enclosure is also set up if one fancies having a shower rather than a swim in the river!
A large awning is erected providing a place where our guests can sit and relax after a fishing session on the river. This is also where breakfast and lunch are served – while dinner is generally served “under the stars” around a bonfire!
The kitchen tent is where the expedition cooks prepare the food. The meals, on these expeditions, are a mixture of Indian and Continental cuisine. Guests need to inform us prior to arrival if they have any dietary restriction and we will be happy to accommodate all such requests.
Camp is much in the old Hemingway style and invariably in the middle of nowhere.
The Fish:
The Legacy of this absorbing sport was brought into the country by the English during their reign in India and was passed on over the years to the Indians. The Himalayas are indeed the perfect setting to take a Mahseer, regardless whether one is inclined on the spinning or the fly. There are few fresh water fish in comparison to its sporting aptitude and which inhabit such torrential waters.
Prior records on fishing for the Mahseer in the North mention some huge Mahseer caught by various anglers. St. J. Macdonald's book, "Circumventing the Mahseer", mentions a Mahseer over 55 lbs caught by him and others including a 75lbs monster caught in the early nineteenth century. Though he goes on to say that that there would be few anglers in the North who could claim a fifty-pound plus Mahseer! A fifty-pound fish in the North is considered a trophy because of the fight that this fish puts up in the torrid Himalayan waters.
