Saltwater fly-fishing at its best : Guatemala Fishing has earned a worldwide reputation as THE destination for your billfish fishing trip because anglers regularly have shots at 20+ Sailfish per day. For all of the bluewater anglers, there are opportunities for Blue marlin and Black marlin as well as Tuna and Dorado.
The average catch is about 15 sailfish a day. These high catch rates happen because of two factors: the shape of the seafloor and ocean currents creating a favorable environment for fish that billfish feed on and because under Guatemalan law, all bill fishing is catch and release. There are other fish that if you catch you can keep like dorado and tuna, which the mates will clean and the chef at the Villas del Pacífico Resort will prepare to your utmost delight.
The Fishing:
More and more anglers are hearing and reading stories about fly fishing for billfish, Dorado (dolphin) and tuna. Some of them get curious and decide to try it out. After a trip to Guatemala it’s easy to catch the “this is the only way of fishing for billfish” bug
When a sailfish takes the fly…the angler better have at least a rod for 12 weight line, a reel with a good drag and plenty of backing. Sailfish sometimes go absolutely berserk when they are hooked, they jump, dive, swim side-to-side, skip on the surface, try to jump into the boat and then do it all over again…you imagine a maneuver and some sailfish is bound to attempt it.
Adult sailfish can reach over nine feet in length and weight up to 140 lbs, the female generally the larger fish. However, the average catch is between 70 to 100lbs and 6 to 7 feet in length. The record is 141lbs. Once adults, sailfish only have to worry about big adult Mako sharks, their natural predators, which are scarce in this part of the Pacific Ocean. Experts say sailfish can live up to 10 years but they usually average 4 or 5.
