Estancia del Zorro - Coyhaique, Chile
Estancia del Zorro - Coyhaique, Chile

Chilean Patagonia's Estancia del Zorro is in the Coyhaique Alto mountain range on the Chilean-Argentine border, 23 miles from Coyhaique, Chile. The 15,000 acre Estancia rests in the habitat of the red fox (zorro), the namesake of the Estancia. An abundance of condors, eagles, a myriad of other birds, and unexplored brown trout entice fly-fishers and bird watchers to follow the trail of the red fox.

You and a knowledgeable, patient guide explore the holls, canyons, forests, mountains, pampas, and waters of the Estancia. Your guide helps you flyfish for brown trout on two rivers and on a 15 mile spring creek with browns up to an astonishing 15 pounds, all within the Estancia's private boundaries.

Guest will stay at the Estancia del Zorro in Chile to fish and explore private waters in both Chile and Argentina. We combine fishing for resident brown trout on the Estancia del Zorro with fishing for rainbows on an Argentine Estancia.

After breakfast, you alternate fishing locations during your stay. You fish one day in Chile. The next day you cross the border into Argentina With your bilingual guide. a Scenic 35-minute drive across the Chilean-Argentine border traverses the Argentine pampas to the river. On the road to the river, you pass small lagunas - habitat for swans, shorebirds, and pink flamingos.

The Lodge

Estancia del Zorro, located in the Coyhaique Alto mountain range on the Chilean-Argentine border, 23 miles from the historic city of Coyhaique. Is a full service lodge where we can house up to twelve clients at a time. A main Quincho or Great Room invites guests to relax, swap fish stories, and make plans for the next day's angling. Also located in the main building is the dining room where both breakfast and dinner will be served. Here guests prepare their individual streamside lunches and meet for social hour after fishing.

Peaceful and secluded, the Estancia area is a birdwatcher's paradise for Andean condors, Chilean Southern-ringed kingfishers, eagles, ibis, torrent ducks, and pink flamingos. Nature's wonders abound for fly fishers, photographers, and hikers.

The Waters & Guides

Each of our guides has four or more years experience fishing and exploring these waters. They are both native Chilean and American. Our equipment includes rubber rafts with high-back seat, and good vehicles with trailers to reach all the waters we fish.

Streams and fishing in this area within the boundaries of the Estancia or 45 minutes from it, most of it is wading through the rivers and spring creeks. Many of the streams have seldom, if ever, been fished; some have been discovered only recently. The streams offer diverse fishing; incredible, exciting dry fly action; and, challenging sight fishing in pristine, clean waters were fish could go up to 32 inches. From Zorro you can also float the legendary Simpson River. It is an hour drive from the Lodge.

On your way to nearby rivers and lakes, you may encounter local huasos or ranchers driving their cattle or sheep along the roads or into the hills. You might think you are lost in the wild west of days gone.

Getting There

An impressive, scenic flight on a 737 jet from Santiago, with a stop in Puerto Montt, travels along the incredible Chilean Andes and brings you to Balmecada and a spectacular, awesome world. Chile's Region XI lies within parallels 44.30 and 46.

The Aisén District, a narrow strip of land within an entanglement of islands, fjords, bocas, and channels, appears to drop into the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of Glaciers and waterfalls pool to form deep lakes and then flow through reed-lined channels, wild rivers, and dark canyons. These peaceful depths of Chilean Patagonia are home to an abundance of healthy, resident brown trout and some rainbows.
