How is the fishing in France ?
Gourmetfly.com is offering you a unique way to discover France from its outstanding country... side. Fishing in France is quite good and France has produced enough fly fishing world champions to prove that you can fish and have fun while learning a lot on our rivers. BUT - fishing here is rarely easy. France does not compare with any of the usual commercial fishing destinations. I am not joking, this is a serious warning. No one must expect miracles here, it is a different pleasure!
The Fishing:
The trout season legally starts by March 20th. Some areas offer good early season fishing, but dry fly really starts to be attractive everywhere by late April or May. The peak season will last until mid or late July. August is excellent in the high mountains or for beautiful evening rises in Normandy. The most attractive of these places is the Dordogne, but there are others in the Massif Central mountains. We also have very attractive autumn fishing of salmon (grilse), in Brittany, and sea run trout in Normandy.
The River Touques is host to brown trout, rainbows, grayling & sea run trout. The upper stretches of the Touques are rather narrow and can be fished from the banks. The season runs from March 15 to September 20th. The Touques offers a combination of difficult wild brown trout fishing and sometimes easier to catch rainbow trout. Grayling is found on some stretches. Sea trout is a different fishing experience with dry fly anglers occasionally catching one on a big dry caddis. La Touques can be waded but is often fished from the banks requiring a cast with precision across the trees. The Touques is the best French river for sea-trout with good runs starting with the high tides of June.
La Dordogne in Quercy and Corrèze is a wide powerful stream. It is also a meeting point for a nice choice of smaller rivers and also a meeting point for many of the best French fly fishermen. A fly fishing tackle shop, good fly tyers, and professional guides are all available here. This area has many beautiful places to see and attracts many visitors. May, June and late September would be the 1st choice, but the smaller streams are excellent early starters for March or April. Fish are challenging wild browns and grayling.
The Accommodations:
From B & B’s to luxury hotels to private home rentals, we are able to find the right accommodation to suit your needs and desires.
Additional activities:
When not fishing, there are quaint villages to be discovered, delicious food to be enjoyed, and let’s not forget the fabulous wines of France to be sipped.
