| Butler Arms Hotel, Waterville, Co. Kerry, Ireland |
 |
The charming Butler Arms Hotel was a fishing lodge in the early 19th century. Now a hotel, its atmosphere and hospitality are legendary and four generations of the Huggard family have owned and welcomed guests since 1915.
The Butler Arms is treasured for its air of luxury combined with a homely, intimate atmosphere. Overlooking the Atlantic, and surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland, the hotel is within easy reach of a host of activities and attractions, yet provides the perfect hideaway in which to relax and indulge yourself.
On the Ring Of Kerry, Waterville ( An CoireÁn) "The Little Whirlpool", is the premier coastal tourist centre of South West Kerry. It is famous for attracting celebrities through the years such as Bob Hope, Charlie Chaplin and his family, and Michael Douglas and Katherine Zeta Jones.
Once you have enjoyed the sheer pleasure of a stay with us, you will be drawn back again and again to the beauty of the Ring of Kerry, and the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Butler Arms.
The Fishing:
The main spring salmon run at Waterville is from January to May, with fish averaging 8 pounds in weight. A 12-15 foot double-handed fly rod is recommended. Grilse generally run from May to September, with an average weight of 4 pounds, and lighter tackle is recommended at this time (single-handed rods, 9-11 foot, AFTM 7/8).
Sea-trout fishing begins in mid-May. These fish weigh 2–2½ pounds on average, but Waterville is famous for its occasional specimen trout of 6 pounds or more. Again, a single-handed rod is recommended, with popular flies being the Bibio, Black Pennell, Claret Bumble, Fiery Brown and Watson’s Fancy in sizes 8 - 14.
Rivers in the Waterville area are generally spate rivers and fish best after rain. So it is sensible not to book these until you arrive and can see the prevailing weather conditions. A well-stocked fishing tackle shop is located in Waterville.
The Accommodations:
Our rooms, which include 12 recently-built luxury suites, are impeccably furnished to be your comfortable home away from home, and the stunning views from your window will provide an ever-changing vista of ocean, land and sky bathed in subtly-shifting light.
At the end of your day's activities, you can relax in the peaceful atmosphere of one of three comfortable lounges, or enjoy the cosmopolitan ambience of the Fisherman's Bar with its superb bar food. The winner of many awards for excellent cuisine, The Fisherman’s Bar offers a varied menu, specializing in a variety of fresh seafood & local meats complemented by an excellent wine list. All of the seafood on our menu is caught daily by local fishermen in the bountiful waters of the unpolluted south-west coast.
Additional activities:
The south west coast of Ireland is a mecca for golfers worldwide, with such famous courses as Ballybunion, Tralee, Old Head, Kinsale and Killarney within reach. Waterville's own Championship Links, just 1 mile from the hotel and regarded by many as the jewel in the crown, has recently hosted many of the world's top ranking golfers, such as Tiger Woods, David Duval, Mark O'Meara and the late Payne Stewart. Today a life sized bronze statue pays tribute to his special relationship with Waterville.
The Butler Arms is the ideal centre to tour the Ring of Kerry, famous throughout the world for its rugged mountains and coastline, placid lakes and many archaeological remains, including Staigue Fort and the monastic settlement on Skellig Michael, just a few miles off the coast. For bird watchers, Little Skellig is renowned as an important breeding site for many threatened species of sea birds, while botanists can marvel at the abundant local flora, much of which is to be found nowhere else in Ireland. And for the more energetic , there is cycling, horseriding, and sea sports.
