Camillaun Lodge, Oughterard, Co. Galway, Ireland
Camillaun Lodge, Oughterard, Co. Galway, Ireland

Camillaun, located in the quaint village of Oughterard and family run, is situated in a secluded riverside setting with all the advantages of a modern house yet still embracing the elegance of bygone days

Nestling between the ruggedly beautiful mountains of Connemara and lovely Lough Corrib is the picturesque, sylvan village of Oughterard: the "Gateway to Connemara". On its way to Lough Corrib the Owenriff River cascades into the village which blazes with springtime color as azaleas and rhododendrons blossom along the riverbank.

The Fishing:

Oughterard is the angling capital of Lough Corrib, one of the most important wild brown trout fisheries in Europe. The trout season extends from 15th February to 30th September and there is the added bonus of salmon from late May.

As the weather warms up, in March and April, the duckfly (a black chironomid) hatch peaks and trout can be taken on pupa and adult patterns. You can still troll the lake successfully during this period as well and traditional wet fly fishing with a team of flies is also very successful. Duckfly and Olive fishing continues through April.

Angling methods are fly fishing, both wet and dry, dapping and trolling. Rods can be hired and life jackets and nets are provided with each boat. Ghillies may be arranged on request.

Camillaun encourages our anglers to adopt a catch and release policy whenever possible.

The Accommodations:

The guest accommodation includes rooms with beautiful views of the Owenriff River and countryside. New facilities have recently been added which include a games room with full size snooker table, a fly-tying desk and reading lounge. In the garden there is a hard surface tennis court and gazebo with hot tub, the latter being particularly welcome to the cold and tired angler! There is a large boathouse with rod racks, drying and freezing facilities. We have a substantial selection of trout flies available for purchase and excellent advice is at hand. The boats moored in the garden have direct access to Lough Corrib.

We offer four bright and cheery rooms (three family rooms with ensuite facilities) and a twin / double room with ensuite bathroom for your comfort. You'll have superb views of the river and the surrounding countryside from your bedroom.

The furnishings of the house are mostly antiques collected over many years and tastefully selected for the different rooms.

The view from the dining room is beautiful with the tree-lined river only a stone's throw from the window. A short stroll along by the river before breakfast and you can enjoy the air perfumed by turf fires along the riverbank walk.

Deirdre is an accomplished cook, having run her own restaurant in the village for seven years. Dinner is a set menu and is taken in a single sitting.

Based at Camillaun you need no longer worry about the car, as the village of Oughterard, with its restaurants, hostelries and tackle shops, is just a short walk away via a leafy pedestrian way.

Additional activities:

Close to the shores of Lough Corrib, Oughterard is the perfect base for anglers, walkers golfers, cyclists and sightseers alike. Lough Corrib, the second largest lake in Ireland, is sprinkled with hundreds of small islands ripe for exploring.

Only 27 km (17 miles) from Galway, Oughterard is a splendid centre for touring and viewing the grandeur of the west of Ireland at any time of the year. The 15th century Aughnanure Castle and Glengowla mineral mines are just two the many fascinating places you can visit within a short distance of the village.
