| Grasshopper Cottage, Co. Galway, Ireland |
 |
Grasshopper Cottage is a country home located on the Dooras peninsula on Lough Corrib, three kilometres from the village of Cornamona. The Cottage, with superb lake and mountain views, is 50 metres from the water’s edge and is situated in an area of peaceful, natural beauty with hedgerows of wild flowers, fuchsias and rhododendrons.
Anglers from all over the world come to the Cottage to experience the beauty of the surroundings, the superb fighting quality of the wild brown trout, and to make new friendships both with local people and other visiting anglers. Many fishermen return each year to renew their acquaintance with “the Corrib”, as it is called, to pit their wits against the wily trout and relax and enjoy the hospitality offered by Roy and Sorcha.
Roy and Sorcha have been welcoming anglers to their home for over fifteen years and, being anglers themselves, are totally familiar with the needs of the game fisher. After a day on Lough Corrib, or on other waters in the area, relax in front of a turf fire in the lounge overlooking the lake.
The Fishing:
Fishing on Lough Corrib is primarily for wild brown trout but also for some salmon. Fly fishing is the speciality of the house. The season opens on February 15th and closes on September 30th. It is mid to late March before the first major fly hatches occur.
The Duck Fly is followed by the emergence of Lake Olives and then the famous Mayfly. By mid-June daytime fishing gives way to late evening and night fishing. Daytime angling again improves considerably in September.
The lough is famous for its tradition of dapping terrestrials such as Mayfly, Grasshoppers and Daddy longlegs. Fishing may also be arranged on small ‘brownie’ lakes in the area and on Loughs Mask, Carra and on the Connemara fisheries. Ghillies and tuition are available by prior arrangement. A rod room, with drying facilities and freezer, is adjacent to the house.
The Accommodations:
• Grasshopper Cottage offers warm, comfortable rooms with central heating, most with views of the lake, en-suite bathrooms (no smoking in bedrooms)
• Sorcha prepares wonderful home-cooked meals using produce from the garden or sourced locally including home-made jams and chutnies. Dinner is available – 24 hours notice required.
• Comprehensively stocked fly tying desk for guests’ use and a wide selection of books, magazines, videos on fishing and other topics.
