The Anglers Return, Toombeola, Roundstone, Co. Galway, Ireland
The Anglers Return, Toombeola, Roundstone, Co. Galway, Ireland

Nestling at the foot of Derradda Hill, overlooking the famous Ballynahinch River, The Anglers Return was built in the 1800s as a sporting lodge and is now a guesthouse with real charm. The home of Lynn Hill and her family, the house has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere which is enhanced by the log fires and the many books for guests to browse through. Outside, there's a secluded back yard with stone walls, a profusion of flowers and well-fed fowl wandering about. As Lynn says, "If the cockerel awakens you in the morning, feel free to collect your own egg for breakfast!"

Roundstone, a lively picturesque fishing village, with many good restaurants, pubs and craft shops, is only 7 minutes away, south-west along the coast road. (In June it hosts the Roundstone Arts Week, a celebration of local artists, musicians and writers.)

The Fishing:

The Anglers Return Fishery comprises several intercommunicating lakes draining into the Owenmore (Ballinahinch) River, as well as a chain of brown trout lakes. Game and coarse fishing can be arranged locally, or on Lough Corrib.

Sea-fishing opportunities are plentiful from the local harbours at Roundstone, Clifden and Renvyle, and boats depart daily from Cleggan to the beautiful island of Inishbofin.

The Accommodations:

The Anglers Return has five bright and comfortable guest bedrooms, 1 en-suite and 4 with shared bath. All rooms have lovely views of the lake and gardens.

The three acres of rambling natural gardens surrounding the house _ especially beautiful in May and early June _ provide a peaceful retreat where guests can paint, read, wander or settle down with afternoon tea.

All the food served by Lynn is home produced and delicious. Given prior notice, she will happily provide an evening meal or you can book into one of the many excellent local seafood restaurants.

Additional activities:

Golf is available at Ballyconneely and a scenic 18 hole Pitch and Putt course is nearby at Recess.

Pony trekking on the beach or in the mountains on the famous Connemara pony would be another great choice. And if ponies are not for you, how about a bicycle? Bicycle hire is available a half kilometer away at the Toombeola service station.

Beach combing is waiting for you at Gorteen Beach (windsurfing school also available) and Dogs Bay with its lovely white sand consisting solely of tiny shells of Foraminifera. After a walk on the beach, how about a hike near the 12 Bens mountain range or in the Maam Turk mountains?

Rates:

From EURO 48 per person per night sharing, inclusive of Full Irish breakfast. Single rates also available on request. Special package rates may be arranged as well.
