Luca Castellani - Tuscany, Umbria, & Lazio, Italy
Luca Castellani - Tuscany, Umbria, & Lazio, Italy

Luca Castellani was born in Perugia, Umbria in 1955 and he’s been fly fishing since the early 1980’s. Luca has been a professional guide since 2001. He writes for several fly fishing magazines and he is also a fly tyer. For the results achieved in fly fishing and in environmental protection programs of the river ecosystems, Luca and his fraternal friend and colleague, Mauro Raspini were proclaimed Fly Fishermen of the Year in 2007 by the most important fly fishing magazines in Italy.

The Fishing:

Four rivers and five flyfishing areas:

Tevere river, Nera river, Santa Susanna river, Velino river

The Tiber Tail Water is a TRUE tail water with the waters being released at a very chilly 3-4 degrees Centigrade, slowly warming to a perfect environment for grayling and eventually brown trout. Due to the “youthfulness” of the tail water, the fish have not had the opportunity to reach great size – however, the large number of fish is mind boggling. This fishery is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Florence. Luca is also the River Keeper of this river. The TWT flows in Tuscany.

The Nera River is about a 1 hour drive from Saint Francis’ majestic hometown of Assisi. The “No Kill” fishing tracts of the Nera Valley are in two designated areas which offer diverse challenges but are only 15 minutes apart. Fario (Brown) trout is the abundant species in the Upper Nera River. The crystal clear waters allow the angler to easily see the fish, some at over 65 centimeters. This is the oldest fly fishing area in Italy, Upper Nera River and Lower Nera River flow in Umbria.

Additional Activities:

We also offer side trips and tours from art and history, scenery and medieval towns, to culinary classes or fashion shopping for your non-fishing companion.
