Argard River / Camp Argard - Norway

It is estimated that more than 5 000 salmon pass the Årgård beat every season on their way to the spawning areas up the Ferga River and in the Öyenså River and its contributories.

The Fishing:

The Årgård River is located 30 km south of the Namsen River and 179 km north of Trondheim. Its starting point is where the Ferga River and Öyenså River converge and it offers two kilometres of excellent salmon fishing (fly only) before it flows into the estuary and then the Lyngen fjord.

In normal conditions, the river is 20-35 meters wide, relatively shallow and easy to wade in. Only in extreme high-water conditions is a two-hand fly rod handy; otherwise the Årgård River is ideal for one-hand fishing with a floating line (class 6-7). You could in fact say that this is a “salmon river for trout fishermen” as the methods and techniques used are in many ways very similar to traditional trout fishing.

The fishing season starts on 1 June and ends on 15 September. The Årgård River is a typical grilse river where most of the salmon weigh an average of 1.2–1.6 kilos. During the first two weeks of the season – before the grilse run starts – most fish weigh 3–6 kilos. From Midsummer and onwards, there is a steady run of grilse with peaks when the river rises because of rainfall.
