Welcome to Captain Adam DeBruin’s Red Hook Fishing.
Adam has had a fly rod in his hand for 19 years and was winning competitive fly-tying competitions by age 12. His passion was further fueled while working at Eledredge Brothers Fly Shop in southern Maine - where he grew up on the water. The wind and tides carried him across the country to Northern California where he fished for wild, west coast Steelhead and graduated from Humboldt State University.
Adam has been providing guided trips for nine years, bouncing back and forth between the upper Florida Keys in the winter to his summer months in western Montana where he spends his time on the remote Smith River, as well as many other Montana rivers.
Adam's specialty is fly fishing, but he also fishes light tackle spin. He welcomes all experience levels; from veteran anglers looking to increase their tally of back breaking tarpon to a first-time saltwater novice. Come spend a day and see for yourself.
Adam is a licensed United States Coast Guard Captain. He is an independent owner and operator of his boat and runs his own business.
The Fishing:
The waters of the Florida Keys are home to a wide variety of amazing fish - Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Sharks, Barracudas, Groupers, Permits, Jacks and the odd Hogfish to name just a few.
Bonefish - Bone fishing in the upper keys is some of the best anywhere! Our average bonefish range from 7 to 9 lbs, with some upwards of 11-15 lbs. An amazingly high number of world record bonefish have been caught in the upper keys, and for good reason; our local waters are teeming with crabs, big shrimp, clams and other foods these fish love so much.
Tarpon - Tarpon are undoubtedly the silver kings of the sea. The big ones mythically appear every spring to swim along there ancient underwater migratory paths, then vanish. But they leave behind their off-spring, (baby tarpon) to keep rods bent and hearts racing until they appear again.
Permit - Permits are bluegill on steroids with eyeballs the size of cows and sight like an eagle. They have been called the holy grail of fly fishing, or the crown jewel of the sport. This is the fish that really tests an angler’s skill, and more importantly his or her PATIENCE.
Redfish - Redfish are the bulldogs of the back country flats. They sometimes are so copper in color you can’t believe they actually blend in to their environment as well as they do. Other times they are as pale and silvery as a bonefish. They are awesome fish that will eagerly eat flies presented well enough to distract them.
