| Weatherbys - Grand Lake Stream, Maine |
 |
Weatherby's has been a destination for sportsman for more than 100 years and the Grand Lake Stream Region of Downeast Maine is renowned for some of the best smallmouth bass, landlocked salmon, and lake trout fishing in the world!
Restricted to fly fishing only since 1903, three-mile long Grand Lake Stream offers fantastic brook trout and salmon fishing with extended fall fishing until October 20th. We also fish dozens of pristine, undeveloped lakes for smallmouth bass, pickerel, yellow and white perch - providing quality fishing opportunities for anglers of all abilities throughout our season.
The Fishing:
Fly fishing only since 1903 Grand Lake Stream has lured anglers from around the globe for nearly 2 centuries. This region is only one of four in the state that have native landlocked salmon – cousin of the mighty Atlantic salmon. One major difference between the landlocked salmon and its larger relative is that the landlocked salmon are actively feeding while in the Stream during the summer.
The season for the salmon begins early May after the ice leaves our lakes and they follow the smelt, a favorite forage fish, into Grand Lake Stream. Not long after the white suckers move it to spawn another wave of salmon targeting the sucker eggs follows. Late May and June bring the May fly and caddis hatches, followed by alder flies, stoneflies and other terrestrials in July.
Typically during mid-summer the salmon move to the deep pools or into the lakes to feed, only to return in late September and October to spawn. We fish until October 20 and experience tremendous fishing for large salmon in the spawning dress during this time.
Our smallmouth bass season begins late May as we fish for pre-spawn smallies on the warming shorelines followed by the explosive top water season of the spawn in June. 50-100 fish days are common fishing top water lures or popping bugs.
July, August and September provide high quality fishing, either with live bait, flies or artificial lures that will excite novice to experienced anglers. Our largest fish usually come to the canoe during this time of year with numerous four to five pound fish caught each season.
The Accommodations:
Weatherby’s offers 15 spacious cottages nestled amongst the trees, with enough space surrounding them to ensure your privacy. Each of these rustic cottages have either an open brick or Franklin fireplace. (After all, what's more enjoyable after a day of fishing than relaxing by an open fire?) To add to your comfort, our cottages have screened porches, private baths and a very cozy bedroom. These rustic cottages are attractive with tasteful antiques, but feature modern amenities and comfortable beds. Every day, our housekeepers make the beds and tidy up your cabin, while our cabin boy ensures you have plenty of fresh ice to keep cool and ample wood and kindling to keep warm. Special attention has been paid to selecting the finest box springs and mattresses for your stay.
Glancing upwards in the large early American dining room, you'll notice the original tin ceiling, and few guests can resist an investigation of the variety of game fish which are mounted on the walls, each with its own terrific story. Breakfast and dinner are served at your private table, while lunch, either a picnic box or hot cook-out, is provided upon request. The cook-out is prepared by your guide, and is an experience you will long remember.
As for breakfast and dinner, we feed hungry fishing families fresh-baked breads, fish chowder, roast turkey and lobster dinners, with a signature strawberry-rhubarb pie for dessert. We're glad to cook what you catch any way you like it! A bounty of homemade breads, rolls, pies and pastries are baked daily to accompany the delicious meals prepared by our chef.
Additional activities:
You say you don’t fish? Within close proximity to our lodge we have access to a public beach and dock on Grand Lake for great swimming, our local land trust has developed several hiking trails just outside of town and the mountain bike opportunities are endless. Within a short drive of Weatherby’s you can visit Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge or Eastport and East Quoddy Head, the eastern most point in the United States. From here, whale and bird watching cruises are available or you can spend the afternoon sailing on a schooner in Passamaquoddy Bay. Or spend a day exploring historic Machias, St. Andrews by the Bay or St. Stephen, Canada's Chocolate Town. Opportunities are virtually limitless as you explore the roads less traveled on the down east Maine Coast.
For golf enthusiasts, the region is home to two beautiful coastal courses: the St. Croix Country Club in Calais, Maine and the Algonquin in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.
