South Florida Fishing Adventures - South Florida
South Florida Fishing Adventures - South Florida

Why travel all the way to South America when these beautiful butterfly peacock bass can be caught right in South Florida. A great comparison of the fight they put up is like a smallmouth bass on steroids!

The Fishing:

From Lake Okeechobee and the South Florida Everglades we have a world famous bass and peacock bass fishing factory. South Florida is a great fishing destination in all seasons to catch peacock bass and largemouth bass. The Everglades during the spring can produce up to 100 bass per angler! Lake Okeechobee speaks for itself with numerous large bass caught year after year with artificial or live wild shiners. For the Amazon butterfly peacock bass Miami and Ft. Lauderdale lakes and canals are loaded with these awesome fish!

Peacock bass were introduced to South Florida back in 1984 with an extensive stocking project to control exotic species of cichlids and tilipia. The peacock bass provides a great source of sport fishing opportunities without having to travel deep into the Amazon. These butterfly peacock bass also exist all over South America and grow to about 15 lbs. Unfortunately the South Florida record is about 10.5 lbs but could be broken anytime now. The Amazon has many different species that grow to over 25 lbs. with 10 to 20 lbs. being the normal size fish you would expect in Brazil. South Florida Peacock Bass grow regularly to about 6 to 7 lbs. and are similiar to smallmouth bass from the northern part of the United States. On light tackle these great fighting fish will test your angling skills. Peacock bass regularly hit the same type baits we would use for large and smallmouth bass except plastic worm type baits. The most popular type baits we use are topwaters, small jerkbaits, rattletraps, and many small jigs type lures are the favorites. Small live shiner type minnows also work very well in all conditions. Peacock bass give us plenty of options for catching them under many different water and weather conditions which makes them fun for the whole family. Unlike largemouth bass, peacock bass are not as finicky which makes them easier to get to feed especially on live bait. Our best season is usually from February through August, but these fish will bite year round with regularity. So for some great Peacock Bass fishing in South Florida plan a fishing trip anytime of the year because these great battlers feed when you want them to.

With many fishing options for bass fishing in the United States, South Florida has some of the best bass catching creel numbers anywhere. Many surveys have been conducted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife department in the South Florida Everglades with catches totaling up to 1.5 fish per hour. That's being conservative I can assure you, especially during the low water spring fishing season! Largemouth bass are over abundant in the Everglades from February through July. The canal system covers hundreds of square miles of bass fishing heaven. These canals are lined with weedy cover like lily pads, sawgrass, and different submerged grasses which allow these bass to spawn every year with tremendous hatches of fry. These bass are caught many different ways from great topwater action to down the drop off ledges with plastics of all types. When these water levels are low from a lack of rain water, the bass stage under the lily pads for some of the best topwater action.
